Jaden my five year old and I got there an hour and a half earlier than Arati and Sailor her fifteen year old. As her practice deepened into a daily ritual she began to feel a healing and transformation occur in her life. This inspired her first steps towards teaching and she then began to explore the intricate studies of yoga and spirituality. With over 450 hours of training Olivia is certified in Vinyasa, Hatha, Restorative, and most recently Aerial Yoga. Graduating with a Masters in Spiritual Psychology in 2010 she believes the mind, body, soul connection is a sacred one. Her classes are a safe space for students to begin to explore and expand within their own bodies and consciousness.</span><br>

After launching a sportswear line with her husband in the late 80′s and becoming a mother of two daughters, it was time for a healing change. Trusting in the age old adage, “Do what you love”, was the consistent echo in her mind. A pivotal time of transition, a powerful period in her life as she realized the path that called her. Do what you love clearly meant that she become a teacher. </span></div>

For when not in a good feeling place it is a struggle finding positive aspects and try to milk them to feel even better. It fact trying to do this on a charged subject just brings out more of the "negative" aspects of that subject. It would be better to go general on the topic that is needing to shift. A focus wheel exercise would be an ideal way to shift a negative thought to a positive.<br />
<br />
With that said. There are those extraordinary moments where I'm already feeling close to or in that place of contentment and I could use a boost. This is where making a list of positive aspects could shift energy to a higher place of allowing, expanding source energy into such a place that has "the power to create worlds" and transform the life. <br />

Appreciating feels like being in Love with life, an expansive heart opening expression that moves gratitude to a higher energy vibration. But of course feel either emotion as genuine emotional guidance, it is just helpful to realize which is closer to source energy.<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">The term </span><em><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Vinyasa</span></em><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> is used in many contexts – here I am discussing the sequence of postures commonly referred to as a “vinyasa.” These asanas consist of plank, chaturanga dandasana, bhujangasana or urdhva mukha svanasana, and adho mukha svanasana. The following are a few tips to help you to move through a vinyasa mindfully and without causing harm to your back and shoulders.</span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;"><strong><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">Understand the difference between</span></span><em><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"> bhujangasana</span></span></em><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"> and</span></span><em><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;"> urdhva mukha svanasana.</span></span></em></strong></div><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Cobra pose (bhujangasana) is practiced laying belly-down on the earth with the palms flat on either side of the chest. The elbows stay bent so that you are able to draw the shoulders back and relax them down away from the neck as you rise up into the pose. The palms press gently into the ground and draw back towards the feet.</span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> Upward dog (urdhva mukha svanasana) is practiced with just the tops of the feet and the palms pressing strongly down into the earth. The arms are straight with a micro-bend in the elbows so that you aren’t hyper-extending. There is a very strong lift with the inner thighs and abdominal muscles to prevent strain in the lower back. </span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> I often see people practicing a combination of the two with their arms straight but their hips are on the ground. This in-between place is dangerous for the shoulders and low back. Upward dog is a very difficult pose – if it’s too much for you, opt for cobra. It is very safe and helps to open the chest, shoulders and upper back. </span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;"><strong><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">Be extremely mindful of the shoulders in </span></span><em><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">chaturanga dandasana</span></span></em><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">.</span></span></strong></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Practicing chaturanga correctly is extremely challenging. I often see students internally rotating and angling the heads of their shoulders downwards which will cause wear and tear on the shoulders over time. I also see people lowering too far down towards the earth, making the pose and the transition to upward dog more difficult than it has to be.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Lower down only until the elbows are bent at 90 degree angles. Keep the heads of your shoulders lifted at least as high as the elbows and keep your shoulder blades hugging onto the back towards the spine. The chest is open and the shoulders are externally rotated. The abdominal muscles are drawn in and the inner thighs are lifting. </span><br />

If you are practicing cobra instead of upward dog, than you will definitely be slower than the rest of the class. That’s okay – take your time, and ALWAYS move with our breath.</span><br />

There are so many excuses: New Baby (top priority~ but I could get up earlier than he does like 4:00. hmmmm no...) But I can definitely find another time. It is time to focus on time management and weed out all of those other excuses. Chores,t.v, the list can go on. I'm okay with the dusty fan. What We Do Is We Don’t Do Much<br />

My yoga practice has evolved quite a bit over the last ten years and I can truly say that most of the time, the poses, the breath and the concentration seem effortless. The struggling, competition and distractions that once hindered me have now dissipated to the point where I no longer feel like the “doer” and I'm one with the flow. With that said, I got to the point where I wondered, “now what?” I can do a freestanding handstand, I can put my foot behind my head and I have mastered all sorts of fun arm balances and transitions but as I often say in class, they’re all just stupid poses. If you can do them great, if you can’t do them who cares! When I come onto my mat, I forget about what happened before and I don’t anticipate what I’m about to do or what might happen after class. My breath guides me through full awareness from moment to moment so reaching a meditative state through asana practice has become the norm. It wasn’t too long after I realized this that I met my meditation teacher and as they say, when the student is ready the teacher will appear. <br />

Michael teaches TM (Transcendental Meditation), which is known as the no contemplation and no concentration meditation. The first class I took was a blur. All I remember is feeling like I had opened my eyes to a brighter, more vibrant world. Colors popped, my awareness seemed to have expanded, and I felt so much clarity that it was almost overwhelming. I knew this is what had been missing. <br />

Practicing this type of meditation is easy. The idea is to sit comfortably, close your eyes and very gently introduce a mantra as a faint idea. If you don’t know any mantras, use Om Namah (Om is the seed mantra of all mantras. The two syllables na- and mah- can be translated as "I humbly bow to you.) Don’t worry about trying to maintain it for the entire session, just let it come and go as it pleases. You’re not trying to force yourself to stop thinking either; let your thoughts rise and fade while remaining calm and innocent. There are no expectations and as Michael says, “What we do is we don’t do much. It almost goes by itself.” The recipe is twice a day -- 20 minutes of meditation and with eyes still closed, 5 minutes of rest on your back afterwards.<br />

Most people will say they don’t have time to do this twice a day, but when you commit to something, you make it happen. I once got up at 4am to meditate because I knew I wouldn’t find the time later. Sometimes I don’t watch TV (okay, I never watch TV but I’m making a point here) and other times I choose to stay home instead of going for happy hour drinks. I could write forever about how amazing meditation is but I will say that it’s changed my life drastically. The things that once bothered me can’t even touch me, the peace I feel when I’m sitting with my eyes closed follows me to every waking moment, my mind is calm, my body feels healthier and stronger, I’m more productive and definitely more aware. I’m attracting positive experiences and I’m happier than I’ve ever been no matter what happens. <br />
